When everyone talks about sustainable development, it is easy to forget that it is a goal and not something we are in. Changing society will require large investments, lots of work, dramatic changes and a lot of will. To motivate those investments, a future worth investing in is needed. But the images of the future we usually encounter are bleak, whether they come from politics, science or popular culture.
Building a positive and credible future picture is not something that is done in the blink of an eye. But somewhere you have to start and such a beginning is in your own subjective dream. What would I like the future to look like? To investigate what such shared dreams could look like, we invited to a workshop called Prototopia. As a boundary, we chose one of the most crucial sustainability challenges: the food system.
We, Maria Cosnier och Peter Wrenfelt - U&We, Joel Lindefors - Futerra, Mathias Gullbrandson - Blocks of Coral, and Olle Bjerkås, invited about 30 experts, food influencers, researchers, farmers and those involved in sustainability and food, to sketch images of a positive future of our food systems during three short sessions. The starting point was partly 1) the timeline that both the Paris Agreement and the EU's recently adopted climate law state, that it is the next ten years that the change must take place, and partly 2) the conclusions about the food system that the Eat Lancet states.
Our basic question was: “Sweden has a climate-neutral and regenerative agriculture and at the same time produces enough calories to feed a growing population. What does the system look like that makes it possible? ”
The sessions were based on the principle “Thinking right is great. To think freely is greater ”. The result of these three short sessions is the texts and images that are on future pages. It is not a collective dream or vision but a collage of dreams of five groups and 30 individuals. Thus, it contains contradictions and in some cases conflicts. There is also no claim whatsoever to constitute a comprehensive vision of the future, this is just an attempt that can hopefully inspire or provoke more dreams about the future.
The process has resulted in the texts and images published in this dream book along with a rendering of the method we used: Prototopia. All participants who so wish are included as co-authors. This process is a pilot, the idea is to be able to repeat what we do with different themes and participants.
Prototopia is a joint exploration with the aim of creating guiding stars that we all need, to be inspired for a positive future. The result is a short writing (freely licensed under creative commons CC BY-SA 4.0) that everyone can use.
